esquimal

Los esquimales (en su propio idioma, el inuktitut, ᐃᓄᐃᑦ inuit) viven en las regiones árticas de América, Groenlandia y Siberia. En Canadá, se definen a sí mismos como inuit, que significa "el pueblo" en inuktitut, ya que esquimal parece ser un término de origen algonquino (cree) que significa «devoradores de carne cruda». La palabra esquimal (eskimo en inglés) ha caído en desuso en Canadá, donde actualmente solamente se utiliza inuit. El singular es inuk. Este pueblo tiene sus orígenes en el noreste de Asia. Hace varios miles de años cruzaron el estrecho de Bering para asentarse también en el norte de América. Pero los inuit no son, propiamente dichos, ni amerindios ni miembros de las Primeras Naciones, aunque sí autóctonos; sus ancestros habrían venido a América varios milenios después de la llegada de los primeros Protoamerindios de Asia.
