The esophagus (also spelled oesophagus/œsophagus, Greek ), or gullet is an organ in vertebrates which consists of a muscular tube through which food passes from the pharynx to the stomach. In humans, the esophagus is continuous with the laryngeal part of the pharynx at the level of the C6 vertebra.

L'esofago è un organo a forma cilindrica dell'apparato digerente della lunghezza di circa 25-30 cm e una larghezza di 2-3 cm. Collega la faringe allo stomaco e presenta una duplice funzione: consentire il passaggio del cibo (bolo alimentare) fino allo stomaco dove avverrà la digestione ed impedirne il reflusso dallo stomaco insieme ad acido e succhi gastrici.
