Epistolary novel
An epistolary novel is a novel written as a series of documents. The usual form is letters, although diary entries, newspaper clippings and other documents are sometimes used. Recently, electronic "documents" such as recordings and radio, blogs, and e-mails have also come into use. The word is derived through Latin from the Greek word ἐπιστολή epistolē, meaning a letter (see epistle).

Briefroman
Ein Briefroman ist eine Sammlung fingierter Briefe, die sich in ihrer Präsentation - unter Umständen zusammengehalten von einer Herausgeberstimme - zur Romanhandlung verdichten. Möglich sind Briefwechsel zwischen verschiedenen Personen wie die briefliche Hinterlassenschaft eines einzelnen Helden. Wegen seiner Unmittelbarkeitsfiktion ist der Tagebuchroman dem Briefroman vergleichbar.

Roman épistolaire
Le roman épistolaire est un genre littéraire dans lequel le récit se compose de la correspondance fictive d'un ou plusieurs personnages. Les chapitres de ces romans sont généralement organisés par les lettres écrites entre les personnages (chaque lettre séparée des autres et portant un chiffre, une date, le nom du destinataire ou une combinaison de ces éléments).

Brevroman
Brevroman, roman som utgörs av en samling fiktiva brev. Det finns föregångare till genren redan under 1600-talet, som De fem portugisiska kärleksbreven (1669). Genren blev framför allt populär under upplysningen. Kända exempel är:
- Samuel Richardson, Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded (1740)
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Julie eller Den nya Héloïse (1761)
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Den unge Werthers lidanden (1774)
- Choderlos de Laclos, Farliga Förbindelser (1782)
- Fredrika Bremer, Grannarne (1837)
- Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897)
- Sven Delblanc, Jerusalems natt (1983)

Powiesc epistolarna
Powieść epistolarna - powieść skonstruowana w formie listów (niekiedy przeplatających się z fragmentami pamiętnika), wymienianych między sobą przez bohaterów. W XIX wieku, w związku z wprowadzeniem wszystkowiedzącego narratora, popularność tej formy powieściowej zmalała.
Przykłady z literatury europejskiej:
- "Listy perskie" (1721) - Monteskiusza; debiut filozofa, wydane anonimowo
- Pamela: Or Virtue Rewarded - "Pamela, czyli cnota wynagrodzona" (1740) - Samuel Richardson; uznawana za pierwszą powieść epistolarną
- Julie ou la nouvelle Héloïse - "Julia, czyli Nowa Heloiza" (1761) - Jean Jacques Rousseau
- Die Leiden des jungen Werther - "Cierpienia młodego Wertera" (1774) - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
- Les Liaisons dangereuses - "Niebezpieczne związki" (1782) - Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
- "Listy Elżbiety Rzeczyckiej" (1824) - Klementyna z Tańskich Hoffmanowa
