ENQUIRE was an early software project written in the second half of 1980 by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN, who went on to create the World Wide Web in 1989. ENQUIRE had some of the same ideas as the Web and the Semantic Web but was different in several important ways. It was created to scientists to be able to keep track of different thinks. One of them was that it was not supposed to be released to the general public. ENQUIRE was written in the Pascal programming language and implemented on a Norsk Data machine under SINTRAN III.

ENQUIRE partageait certaines idées du Web et du Web sémantique mais il en différait aussi par plusieurs points importants ; entre autres, il n’était pas censé être disponible pour le grand public.

ENQUIRE var ett tidigt mjukvaruprojekt från andra hälften av 1980. Projektet skapades av Tim Berners-Lee som längre fram, 1989, även skapade webben. ENQUIRE hade en del gemensamt med webben och den semantiska webben men var även annorlunda på flera viktiga sätt: ENQUIRE var exempelvis inte avsett att släppas till allmänheten. Programmet skrevs i programmeringsspråket Pascal och implementerades på en minidator av fabrikat Norsk Data.

ENQUIRE – wczesny, niezrealizowany projekt hipertekstowy (ok. 1980 r.) Tima Berners-Lee, który zawierał szereg idei wdrożonych dekadę później w World Wide Web oraz niektóre pomysły Semantic Web, choć różniący się w niektórych istotnych kwestiach. Nazwa była skrótem od znanej w czasach wiktoriańskich samokształceniowej książki Enquire Within Upon Everything, którą Berners-Lee czytał w młodych latach.
