endothermic
adj.
warm-blooded, having a constant internal temperature (Biology); pertaining to the absorption of heat (Chemistry)
Endothermic
This article is about the physical effect. For self-maintained thermal homeostasis, see
warm-blooded.In
thermodynamics, the word endothermic describes a process or reaction that absorbs
energy in the form of
heat. Its etymology stems from the Greek prefix endo-, meaning “inside” and the Greek suffix –thermic, meaning “to heat”. The opposite of an endothermic process is an
exothermic process, one that releases energy in the form of heat. The term “endothermic” was coined by
Marcellin Berthelot.

Compare with
exothermic .An endothermic process is a process that absorbs heat. A positive sign on heat or on the enthalpy change associated with a process indicates that it is endothermic.
