Osmosis is the net movement of water across a partially permeable membrane from a region of high solvent potential to an area of low solvent potential, up a solute concentration gradient.It is a physical process in which a solvent moves, without input of energy, across a semi permeable membrane (permeable to the solvent, but not the solute) separating two solutions of different concentrations. Osmosis releases energy, and can be made to do work, as when a growing tree-root splits a stone.

L’osmose désigne le phénomène de diffusion de molécules de solvant (l'eau de façon générale) à travers une membrane semi-perméable qui sépare deux liquides de concentrations en soluté différentes. Le passage de solvant d'un compartiment à l'autre va créer une différence de pression hydrostatique qui va compenser exactement la différence de pression osmotique (cf. ci-après).

Osmoza - swobodna dyfuzja dowolnego indywiduum chemicznego (jonów lub cząsteczek) z jednego roztworu do drugiego przez membranę półprzepuszczalną.Siłą napędową osmozy jest różnica stężenia dyfundującego indywiduum chemicznego w obu roztworach, a dokładniej ich cząstkowy potencjał chemiczny, odnoszący się do tego rodzaju indywiduów chemicznych, które mogą przenikać przez membranę. Spontaniczna osmoza przebiega zawsze od roztworu o większym stężeniu do roztworu o mniejszym. W pewnych szczególnych warunkach można też wymusić odwrotny kierunek przepływu, co nazywane jest odwróconą osmozą.
