Emo
Emo is a style of
rock music which describes several independent variations of music with common stylistic roots. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate. In the mid-1980s, the term emo described a subgenre of
hardcore punk which originated in the
Washington, DC music scene of the mid-1980s. In later years, the term emocore, short for "emotive hardcore" or sometimes "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the emotional performances of bands in the Washington DC scene and some of the offshoot regional scenes such as
Rites of Spring,
Embrace,
One Last Wish,
Beefeater,
Gray Matter,
Fire Party, and later,
Moss Icon.

L'emo (prononciation : ['imo]) est un sous-genre du
punk hardcore. Depuis l'apparition du terme, emo a fini par définir différentes variantes indépendantes, aux liens de parenté assez lâches, mais ayant une origine commune. Son utilisation (notamment en ce qui concerne le fait de savoir quels groupes peuvent recevoir ce qualificatif) est sujette à beaucoup de controverses.

hardcore punk, fu infatti diverso dal sound hardcore più grezzo e violento visto sino ad allora, e conteneva una maggiore attenzione sia ai testi che alla tecnica musicale, ed influenzò moltissimo la scena musicale di
Washington DC tanto che fu proprio in questa zona che venne usato per la prima volta il termine emo per definire band in sostanza sempre hardcore ma con sonorità più melodiche e ricche. I nomi più significativi sono

Embrace (il gruppo di
Ian MacKaye precedentemente leader dei
Minor Threat che dopo fonderà insieme al cantante dei Rites of Spring i
Fugazi, band anch'essa di grande importanza per l'emo nel finire degli
anni ottanta),
One Last Wish,
Gray Matter,
Fire Party e leggermente dopo
Moss Icon e i The Hated. La prima ondata emo iniziò a scemare con lo scioglimento nei primi
anni '90 di molte delle band citate.
