Eminent domain (United States), compulsory purchase (United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland), resumption/compulsory acquisition (Australia), or expropriation (South Africa and Canada) is an action of the state to seize a citizen's private property, expropriate property, or seize a citizen's rights in property with due monetary compensation, but without the owner's consent. The property is taken either for government use or by delegation to third parties who will devote it to public or civic use or, in some cases, economic development. The most common uses of property taken by eminent domain are for public utilities, highways, and railroads; however, it may also be taken for reasons of public safety, such as in the case of Centralia, Pennsylvania. Some jurisdictions require that the government body offer to purchase the property before resorting to the use of eminent domain.

Als Enteignung bezeichnet man juristisch den Entzug des Eigentums an einer unbeweglichen oder beweglichen Sache durch den Staat, im Rahmen der Gesetze und gegen eine Entschädigung. In der Umgangssprache wird auch die Konfiskation, der entschädigungslose Entzug, oft als Enteignung bezeichnet. Die Enteignung von Produktionsmitteln bzw. Unternehmen wird meist als Verstaatlichung bezeichnet (laut Artikel 15 des Grundgesetzes als Vergesellschaftung), die Enteignung von Grund und Boden in großem Stil als Bodenreform oder Landreform (Land als Synonym für Grundbesitz). Hier wie auch bei individuellen Enteignungen aus verkehrstechnischen, militärischen und anderen in den Staatsaufgaben liegenden Gründen wird ein übergeordneter, dem Allgemeinwohl dienender Zweck als Begründung angeführt.

L'espropriazione nel nostro ordinamento è regolata dal D.P.R. 8 giugno 2001, n° 327, recante il Testo unico delle disposizioni legislative e regolamentari in materia di espropriazione perpubblica utilità. Si tratta di un provvedimento emanato dalla pubblica amministrazione in virtù del potere ablatorio di cui è dotata, che ha come conseguenza il trasferimento all'Amministrazione della titolarità di un bene (immobile o di un diritto reale), al fine di consentire la realizzazione di un'opera pubblica e previo pagamento di un indennizzo.
