branch of biology dealing with embryonic formation and development
Embryology
Embryology is the study of the development of an
embryo. An embryo is defined as any vertebrate in a stage before birth or hatching. Embryology refers to the development of the egg cell (
zygote) after fertilization and the differentiation of cells into tissues and organs. This covers development including the formation of primitive organ systems, the creation of fundamental tissues, and cleavage. In humans the term embryo refers to the ball of dividing cells from the moment the blastocyst is implanted until the end of the eighth week after conception. Past the eighth week, the developing human is called a fetus.
