An e-mail address identifies a location to which e-mail messages can be delivered. The term "e-mail address" is also used as the formal pre-registered authoritative electronic mailing delivery site for an individual (example: an attorney's e-mail address registered for delivery of proof of service digital copies of legal pleadings). A modern Internet e-mail address (using SMTP or Usenet) is a string of the form jsmith@example.com. It should be read as "jsmith at example dot com". The part before the @ sign is the local-part of the address, often the username of the recipient, and the part after the @ sign is the domain-part which may be a host name or domain name which can be looked up in the Domain Name System to find the mail transfer agent or Mail eXchangers (MXs) accepting e-mail for that address.

Eine E-Mail-Adresse ist die eindeutige Absender- und Empfängeradresse im E-Mail-Verkehr. Eine E-Mail-Adresse, wie sie für den Transport per SMTP im Internet verwendet wird, besteht aus zwei Teilen: Einem lokalen Teil, im Englischen local-part genannt (steht vor dem @-Zeichen) und einem globalen Teil, im Englischen domain-part genannt (steht nach dem @-Zeichen). Bei der E-Mail-Adresse info@wikipedia.org ist wikipedia.org die Domain, info der local-part. Andere Transportmechanismen wie z. B.  UUCP oder X.400 verwenden eine andere Adress-Syntax.

メールアドレス (mail address) とは、電子メールにおける送信先や発信元を表し、すなわち、住所の役割を果たすものである。略称はメルアド・メアド。誤解の恐れのないときは単にアドレスとも呼ばれる。xxx@yyy.zzzのような形で構成される。xxx の部分がユーザーのIDで、yyy.zzz の部分がドメイン名である。コンピュータ・ネットワークの世界から見れば「ネットワーク“yyy.zzz”に所属する“xxx”という利用者ID」という意味になる。メールアドレスのフォーマットを規定する文書としては、RFCのRFC 2821 (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) およびRFC 2822 (Internet Message Format) が存在している。しかし、一部の実装はこの仕様に準拠しきれておらず、結果として特殊な文字が使用可能な場合もある。
