elk
n.
large antlered deer (type of animal)
Elk
The elk, or wapiti (Cervus canadensis), is the second largest
species of
deer in the world, and one of the largest
mammals in
North America and eastern
Asia. They are almost identical to
red deer found in
Europe, and were long believed to be subspecies of each other, though they have recently been determined to be distinct based on
DNA evidence. In the deer family, only the
moose, which is called an "elk" in Europe, is larger.
