elite

Elite (also spelled Élite) is taken from the Latin, eligere, "to elect". In sociology as in general usage, the élite is a relatively small dominant group within a larger society, which enjoys a privileged status which is upheld by individuals of lower social status within the structure of a group. When applied to an individual, as in the phrase "many elites come from this squad," the usage quite economically both refers to an individual within that class and establishes the speaker as non-elite.

Élite est un substantif de genre féminin, dérivé de l'ancien français eslite (du latin eligere qui donnera élu). Étymologiquement, le terme se rattache donc à l'idée d'élection, non au sens du suffrage mais à celui de l'approbation par autrui de la place détenue par quelqu'un dans la société. L'élite, c'est la fleur d'une société : de même que la fleur se dresse sur sa tige, l'élite entend dépasser le niveau du sol.

Unter „Elite“ (lat.: Auswahl) versteht man soziologisch Gruppen oder Schichten überdurchschnittlich qualifizierter Personen (Funktionseliten, Leistungseliten) oder die herrschenden bzw. einflussreichen Kreise (Machteliten) einer Gesellschaft, wobei „Funktion“, „Leistung“ und „Macht“ hier oft in engem Zusammenhang stehen. Konkret bezieht sich der Begriff meist auf näher definierte Personenkreise, wie z. B. die Bildungselite. Als Gegenbegriff wird häufig Masse oder Durchschnitt („Normalbürger“) verwendet.
