Elevation
The elevation of a geographic location is its height above a fixed reference point, most commonly a reference geoid, a mathematical model of the Earth's sea level as an equipotential gravitational surface (see Geodetic system, vertical datum). Elevation, or geometric height, is mainly used when referring to points on the Earth's surface, while altitude or geopotential height is used for points above the surface, such as an aircraft in flight or a spacecraft in orbit, and depth is used for points below the surface.

Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel
Höhen über dem mittleren Meeresspiegel (auch See- oder Meereshöhe) dienen der Angabe von Höhen von meist geografischen Objekten, insbesondere von Höhen der Erdoberfläche (Berge, Täler, Gelände, Bauwerke, Verkehrswege). Der mittlere Meeresspiegel wird dabei als Bezugsfläche (Nullpunkt, Höhenreferenz) verwendet. Zwar ändert sich der Meeresspiegel auch an Küsten ohne wesentliche Gezeiten oder Driftströme um oft mehr als einen Meter, doch kann sein Mittelwasser durch langjährige Messungen an einem Pegel genau genug bestimmt werden.

Altitude
L'altitude est l'élévation verticale d'un lieu ou d'un objet par rapport à un niveau de base. C'est une des composantes géographique et biogéographique qui explique la répartition de la vie sur terre.

Elevation
Elevation kan ha flera betydelser:
- Bruket att vid nattvarden lyfta upp det invigda brödet och kalken med det invigda vinet för församlingen. Se elevation (liturgi).
- En byggnads yttre fasad kallas ibland felaktigt elevation. Detta är emellertid en anglicism. Den korrekta svenska termen för ritningar är (vertikal)projektion. En arkitektritning på en byggnads yttre kallas just fasad (som i och för sig är ett franskt lånord) och inget annat.
- Inom artilleriet ett skjutvapens uppsättning.
- Vid riktantenner pekriktningen i vertikalled.
- Inom spiritism fenomenet att en person eller ett föremål svävar i luften utan påverkan av iakttagbara yttre medel.

Elevation
Elevation to piosenka rockowej grupy U2, pochodząca z jej wydanego w 2000 roku albumu, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Została wydana jako trzeci singel promujący tę płytę. Utwór szybko stał się hitem w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Wielkiej Brytanii. Był on zawsze utworem otwierającym każdy koncert zespołu, będący częścią trasy Elevation Tour oraz jednym z pierwszych granych podczas trasy Vertigo Tour.

Wysokosc bezwzgledna
Wysokość bezwzględna - wysokość danego punktu względem przyjętego punktu odniesienia, którym jest średni poziom morza. Wysokość bezwzględna oznaczana jest skrótem n.p.m., czyli nad poziomem morza.
W niektórych krajach wysokość tego samego punktu może się nieznacznie różnić, ze względu na przyjęte różne krajowe systemy odniesienia, w których poziom morza obliczany jest na podstawie wskazań różnych mareografów. Rosyjskie, później zaś i polskie mapy używają wskazań mareografu w Kronsztadzie, austro-węgierskie - mareografu w Trieście.
