elastomer

The term elastomer is often used interchangeably with the term rubber, and is preferred when referring to vulcanisates. Elastomer comes from two terms, elastic (describing the ability of a material to return to its original shape when a load is removed) and mer (from polymer, in which poly means many and mer means parts). Each link of the chain is the "-mer" or basic unit that is usually made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and/or silicon. To make the chain, many links or "-mers" are hooked or polymerized together. They are amorphous polymers existing above their glass transition temperature, so that considerable segmental motion is possible. At ambient temperatures rubbers are thus relatively soft (E~3MPa) and deformable. Their primary uses are for seals, adhesives and molded flexible parts.

Un élastomère est un polymère « élastique » : il supporte de très grandes déformations (>> 100%) (presque) totalement réversibles. La plupart des élastomères sont des polymères organiques. Les élastomères Silicones se distinguent par leur nature minérale et non pas organique.

Elastomere sind formfeste, aber elastisch verformbare Kunststoffe, deren Glasübergangspunkt sich unterhalb der Raumtemperatur befindet. Die Kunststoffe können sich bei Zug- und Druckbelastung verformen, finden aber danach wieder in ihre ursprüngliche, unverformte Gestalt zurück. Elastomere finden Verwendung als Material für Reifen, Gummibänder, Dichtungsringe, etc.

Elastomery to szersza grupa materiałów niż gumy, które stanowią tylko jedną z klas elastomerów.Elastomer posiada zdolność zmiany w szerokim zakresie swoich wymiarów w momencie gdy jest poddawany naprężeniom rozciągającym, ścinającym lub ściskającym oraz następnie powrót do poprzednich wymiarów. Np: niektóre rodzaje gum opartych na kauczukach silikonowych można rozciągnąć o 100% pierwotnych wymiarów bez zerwania.

Elastomeren zijn polymeren met rubberachtige eigenschappen. Het woord elastomeer komt van de woorden ‘elastisch’ en ‘mer’ (meros in het Grieks betekent deel, zoals in bijvoorbeeld ‘polymeer’ of ‘monomeer’) Een elastisch materiaal neemt weer zijn oorspronkelijke vorm aan na verwijdering van een externe belasting zolang de belasting binnen het kritische gebied valt. Indien de belasting gedurende lange tijd wordt aangehouden ontstaat een fenomeen dat men kruip noemt, de rek neemt toe onder constante belasting en dit resulteert in een permanente vervorming van het elastomeer. (Dit treedt bijvoorbeeld op als men een elastiek gedurende lange tijd opspant)
