An ecumenical council (or oecumenical council; also general council) is a conference of ecclesiastical dignitaries and theological experts convened to discuss and settle matters of Church doctrine and practice. The word "ecumenical" derives from the Greek language "", which literally means "the inhabited world", – a reference to the Roman Empire that later was extended to apply to the world in general. Due to schisms, only the two earliest councils can be considered to have included bishops of the entire Christian Church, as it existed before those schisms. Later councils included bishops of only parts of the Church as previously constituted, leading the Christians who do not belong to those parts to reject the actions of those councils.

Als ökumenische Konzilien der Alten Kirche werden im Christentum sieben allgemeine Bischofsversammlungen bezeichnet, die von 325 bis 787 stattfanden und von den orthodoxen, den katholischen und – bis auf Nicäa II (umstritten) – von den evangelischen Kirchen anerkannt werden (s. auch Liste ökumenischer Konzile):

• Erstes Konzil von Konstantinopel (381)
• Konzil von Ephesos (431)
• Konzil von Chalcedon (451)
• Zweites Konzil von Konstantinopel (553)

Un concile (du latin concilium, assemblée), ou synode (du  grec sun-odos = chemin commun), est une assemblée d'évêques de l'Église catholique (romaine ou non) ou orthodoxe. Il manifeste une dimension essentielle de toute Église chrétienne : la synodalité ou organisation hiérarchique du corps en vertu de laquelle les prélats chargés du gouvernement de chaque portion de l'Église (évêques) sont susceptibles de se réunir pour prendre ensemble des décisions qui engagent la foi et la discipline de tous sous l'autorité d'un primat.

Koncilium (eller konsilium - på svenska kyrkomöte) betecknar en sammankomst inom den kristna kyrkan för att avgöra lärofrågor och rättsregler.

Sobór powszechny, sobór ekumeniczny - w kościołach chrześcijańskich - spotkanie biskupów całego Kościoła w celu ustanowienia praw kościelnych (kanonów soborowych) i uregulowania spraw doktryny wiary i moralności. Początkowo sobory były zwoływane przez cesarzy rzymskich (bizantyjskich). Sobory Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego (nie uznawane przez pozostałych chrześcijan, w tym prawosławnych i protestantów) są zwoływane przez papieża. Według prawa kanonicznego papież przewodniczy obradom soboru osobiście (lub przez delegatów), a także określa ramy obrad i zatwierdza dekrety soborowe. Śmierć papieża w czasie trwania obrad powoduje ich zawieszenie, i dopiero jego następca może wznowić obrady.
