In Christian theology, ecclesiology is the study of doctrine pertaining to the Church itself as a community or organic entity and with the understanding of what the "church" is — ie., its role in  salvation, its origin, its relationship to the historical Christ, its discipline, its destiny (see Eschatology) and its leadership. It is, therefore, the study of the Church as a thing in itself, and of the Church's self-understanding of its mission and role.

L’ecclésiologie (étymologiquement « étude de l'Église ») est une branche de la théologie chrétienne qui étudie le rôle et l'évolution des Églises en tant qu'institutions. Elle entretient des rapports étroits avec la théologie pastorale, qui traite des fidèles, et le droit canonique, quand il en existe un, certaines églises préférant parler de discipline de l'Église.

Die Kirche (griech.: εκκλησία ekklēsía, "Herausrufung, Volksversammlung" / lat.: ecclesia) ist nach christlichem Glauben nicht primär Selbstorganisation von Menschen (siehe Kirche (Organisation)) oder Kirchengebäude, sondern die Gemeinschaft derer, die von Jesus Christus durch das Evangelium aus der Welt herausgerufen wurden, sich um ihn versammeln im Gottesdienst und von ihm zum Glaubenszeugnis und Dienst der Liebe gesendet werden.
