Extraterrestrial life is life originating outside of the Earth. It is the subject of astrobiology, and its existence remains theoretical. There is no evidence of extraterrestrial life that has been widely accepted by the scientific community. Many scientists believe that if extraterrestrial life exists, its emergence occurred independently, in different places in the universe. An alternative hypothesis is panspermia, which suggests that life might emerge in one location and then spread between habitable planets. These two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive. The study and theorization of extraterrestrial life is known as astrobiology, exobiology or xenobiology. Speculative forms of extraterrestrial life range from sapient beings to life at the scale of bacteria.

Extraterrestrisch (von lat. extra, „außerhalb“ und terra, „Erde“) bezeichnet – als Abgrenzung zu terrestrisch – außerirdisch.Als extraterrestrisch werden in der Astronomie Himmelskörper bezeichnet, die sich außerhalb des Planeten Erde einschließlich seiner Atmosphäre befinden oder dort ihren Ursprung haben. Die Extraterrestrische Physik beschäftigt sich mit physikalischen Phänomenen außerhalb der Erde und ist eng verwandt mit der Astrophysik. Astronomische Objekte deren Ursprung nicht in unserem Sonnensystem liegt, werden auch als extrasolar bezeichnet. So gelten Planeten, die ein anderes Zentralgestirn als die Sonne umkreisen, als extrasolare Planeten oder Exoplaneten.

Prace badawcze poszukiwania choćby najprostszych form organicznych mają miejsce jedynie w przypadku form meteorytów czy próbek zebranych w misjach kosmicznych.Ponieważ hipotetyczne życie pozaziemskie nie musi mieć znanej z Ziemi postaci białkowej: do definiowania go nie jest używana biologiczna definicja życia, lecz trafniejsze jest odwołanie się do definicji cybernetycznej, bądź termodynamicznej.

Extraterrestre è un aggettivo che indica qualsiasi oggetto di provenienza esterna al pianeta Terra, ma che a livello comune viene utilizzato soprattutto per indicare una forma di vita nata al di fuori del pianeta Terra. L'esistenza (presente o passata) di forme di vita extraterrestre è al momento solo ipotetica, dato che non sono mai state trovate chiare prove di organismi o microorganismi al di fuori della biosfera terrestre. Alcune meteoriti mostrano tracce che somigliano a microorganismi primitivi, ma le prove non sono ancora conclusive.
