An ealdorman (from Old English ealdorman, lit. "elder man") is the term used for a high-ranking royal official and prior magistrate of an Anglo-Saxon shire or group of shires from about the ninth century to the time of King Cnut. The term ealdorman was rendered in Latin as dux in early West Saxon charters, and as præfectus (which confusingly, is also the equivalent of gerefa, modern reeve, from which sheriff or shire reeve). In the Life of King Alfred by the Welsh bishop Asser, the Latin equivalent is comes. As the chief magistrate of a shire or group of shires (county) in Anglo-Saxon England, he commanded the army of the shire(s) and districts under his control on behalf of the king.

In der vom neunten und zehnten bis ins elfte Jahrhundert nach Christus etablierten angelsächsisch-dänischen Herrschaftsordnung im frühen England stand der Ealdorman (dt. Aldermann, latinisierte Form Comes) an der Spitze eines Shire (=Grafschaft), der wichtigsten administrativen Einheit der ehemals angelsächsischen Teilreiche. Zusammen mit dem jeweiligen Bischof führte er den Vorsitz im Grafschaftsgericht und befehligte im Kriegsfall das Aufgebot der Grafschaft, das er durch seine, als mächtiger Grundbesitzer oftmals umfangreiche persönliche Gefolgschaft verstärkte.

Ealdorman – wcześniejsza forma angielskiego słowa alderman. Oznaczała człowieka sprawującego władzę z ramienia króla anglosaskiego, ewentualnie głowę rodziny, człowieka otoczonego powszechną czcią i uznaniem, również zarządzającego obszarem dawnego królestwa (hrabstwem). Ealdorman sprawował władzę zarówno wojskową (był zobowiązany do dostarczenia zbrojnych regimentów na polecenie seniora) jak i ekonomiczną (pobór podatków) oraz prawną (stanowił przepisy, rozpatrywał odwołania). Nazwy ealdorman używało się od początku X wieku do początku XI wieku; następnie została ona zastąpiona przez miano earla.
