E pluribus unum
"E pluribus unum" was for most the motto of the United States government until 1956. Along with Annuit Coeptis and Novus Ordo Seclorum, E Pluribus Unum was adopted to appear on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782. According to Alan Frederick, at Oxford University "E pluribus unum" is Latin for "one out of many".
