Dysentery (formerly known as flux or the bloody flux) is frequent, small-volume, severe diarrhea that shows blood in the feces along with intestinal cramping and tenesmus (painful straining to pass stool). Symptoms frequently associated with dysentery include fever and malaise.Dysentery has many causes, including cancer, but is typically associated with infection caused by the ingestion of food or water containing micro-organisms which cause significant inflammation of the intestinal lining. There are two major types: shigellosis, which is caused by one of several types of Shigella bacteria; and amoebic dysentery, caused by the amoeba Entamoeba histolytica. Kiyoshi Shiga discovered the dysentery bacteria in 1898. Dysentery can also be caused by certain medications, for example, some steroids can impact bowel movements.

La dysenterie est une maladie infectieuse grave, aiguë ou chronique du côlon chez l’Homme, caractérisée par des selles fréquentes et aqueuses (diarrhée), souvent mêlées de sang (rectorragie), de mucus ou de glaires et accompagnées de fortes crampes abdominales. Elle est provoquée par l’ingestion d’aliments contenant certains micro-organismes, qui provoquent une maladie dans laquelle l’inflammation des intestins affecte gravement le corps.

Dyzenteria (łac. z gr. dysentería, czerwonka) to ostra choroba zakaźna wywołana przez bakterie; objawem jej są uporczywe, krwawo-śluzowe biegunki i obecność krwi w stolcu oraz gorączka. Bakterie przenoszone są z wydalin chorego za pośrednictwem wody, pożywienia i much.Choroba wywołana jest pałeczką, Shigella dysenteriae, pasożytującą wyłącznie w organizmie człowieka (w jelicie).

Dysenteri (förr rödsot) är en akut tarminflammation. Den kan orsakas av bakterier eller amöbor som oftast kommer in i matspjälkningskanalen genom att man äter infekterad mat. I tarmarna uppstår då en inflammation som allvarligt försämrar allmäntillståndet. Smittan sprids från dåligt vatten och mat men även direkt mellan människor. Det finns inget vaccin mot dysenteri men den går att bota med antibiotika. Viktiga symtom är intensiv diarré och blod i avföringen.
