Edema (American English), oedema or œdema (British English), formerly known as dropsy or hydropsy, is the increase of interstitial fluid in any organ — swelling. Generally, the amount of interstitial fluid is in the balance of  homeostasis. Increased secretion of fluid into the interstitium or impaired removal of this fluid may cause edema.

Das Ödem (v. griechisch οἴδημα „Schwellung“) oder die „Wassersucht“ ist eine tastbare Schwellung des Gewebes aufgrund einer Einlagerung von Flüssigkeit aus dem Gefäßsystem.Ist das Gleichgewicht zwischen Filtration einerseits und Resorption plus Lymphabfluss andererseits zugunsten der Filtration verschoben, so bleibt vermehrt Flüssigkeit im Gewebe. Die Folge ist eine Wasseransammlung im Interstitium: ein Ödem.

Obrzęk - (łac. oedema) stwierdzane w badaniu fizykalnym gromadzenie się płynu w przestrzeni pozakomórkowej i w jamach ciała. Powstaje na skutek zaburzenia równowagi między czynnikami dążącymi do zatrzymania płynu w naczyniach oraz czynników prowadzących do przedostawania się płynu poza ich światło. Obrzęk może być spowodowany zgromadzeniem przesięku lub wysięku.

L'Edema (dal greco οίδημα, gonfiore) è un aumento del liquido interstiziale localizzato nei tessuti all'esterno dei vasi sanguigni e delle cellule.L'edema può interessare una sola zona, come ad esempio una gamba, oppure può essere generalizzato, quando si manifesta in tutto l'organismo; in questo caso, prima che l'edema sia clinicamente evidente, devono accumularsi diversi litri di liquido; per questo motivo l'aumento di peso precede generalmente le altre manifestazioni dell'edema.
