A drogue is a device external to the boat, attached to the stern used to slow a boat down in a storm and to keep the hull perpendicular to the waves. The boat will not speed excessively down the slope of a wave and crash into the next one nor will it broach. By slowing the vessel in heavy weather, the drogue can make it easier to control. A drogue is usually constructed to provide substantial resistance when dragged through the water, and is trailed behind the vessel on a long line. A properly functioning drogue should also prevent pitchpoling.

Treibanker sollen die Abdrift- oder die Vorwärtsbewegung eines Schiffes verringern oder ein Wasserfahrzeug im Wind oder in der Strömung halten. Sie leisten Widerstand durch den Zug im Wasser ohne Grundberührung. Sie können aus einem schwimmenden größeren Gegenstand (z. B. einem an einem Seil befestigtem Fender) oder auch aus einem trichterförmigen Segeltuchsack bestehen. In einem Notfall (z. B. ein Sturm) kann auch alles andere Schwimmfähige an einem Seil befestigt und als Treibanker eingesetzt werden, um das Schiff abzuwettern. Der Treibanker hat nichts mit dem regulären Anker zu tun.

Drivankare är en anordning för att hindra fartyg och båtar att driva alltför snabbt vid biliggning (driva kontrollerat med minimal fart i hårt väder) i hård vind eller för att hålla upp stäven eller aktern mot vinden. Vid sportfiske används det även genom att fästa den i fören eller aktern för att undvika att driva för fort och inte kunna fiska effektivt, eller under körning med båtmotorn under trolling med beten efter båten för att kunna hålla en bra och jämn fart. Drivankaret består oftast av en öppen strut i kraftigt tyg som firas ut i en lång lina från lämplig plats ombord.
