In the theatre, a dramaturge or dramaturg holds a position that gained its modern-day function through the innovations of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, a playwright and theatre practitioner who worked in Germany in the 18th century.The dramaturge's contribution was to categorize and discuss the various types and kinds of plays, their interconnectedness and their styles.The responsibilities of dramaturge vary from one theater company to the next, but they typically include the hiring of actors, the development of a season of plays with a sense of the coherence among them, the assistance with and editing of new plays by resident or guest playwrights, the creation of programs or accompanying educational services, and even helping the director with rehearsals, and serving as elucidator of history or spokesperson for deceased or otherwise absent playwrights.

De benaming dramaturg wordt gebruikt om die persoon aan te duiden die in een toneelgezelschap dramaturgische meewerking verleent aan de regisseur. Ook kiest hij bij sommige gezelschappen de te spelen stukken, maar dan in de rol van artistiek leider.Ook wordt dramaturg gebruikt om toneelkenner aan te geven. Dan benadert hij de toneelkunst theoretisch, als wetenschapper. Binnen deze betekenis, bestudeert een dramaturg de wijze waarop toneelstukken worden opgevoerd, en onderzoekt specifieke toneelvormen. Belangrijk daarbij is bijvoorbeeld welke voorwerpen gebruikt, en op welke manier bepaalde symbolen uitgebeeld worden.

Автор пьес.Отдельным специфическим направлением драматической литературы является создание литературных произведений, написанных специально для кинематографа и телевидения - кинодраматургия. Профессия автора литературных киносценариев называется - кинодраматург. Единственным высшим учебным заведением в стране, выпускающих литераторов с общепризнанным дипломом по специальности "кинодраматург и литературный работник телевидения" является ВГИК в Москве. ‎
