dolabra

The dolabra is a versatile tool used by the people in Italy since ancient times. The dolabra could serve as a pickaxe used by miners and excavators, a priest's implement for ritual religious slaughtering of animals and as an entrenching tool used in Roman infantry tactics.

Eine Dolabra war ein antikes Werkzeug, das insbesondere für Schanzarbeiten im römischen Heer eingesetzt wurde und deswegen auch als „Pionieraxt“ bezeichnet wird. Es wies zwei Schneiden auf einer Schäftung auf, eine senkrechte und eine waagerechte, kann also als Kombination von Axt und Hacke bezeichnet werden. Dementsprechend wurde die Dolabra sowohl zur Holzbearbeitung (entsprechend der späteren Bandhacke) als auch für Erdarbeiten und zum Einreißen von Mauern verwendet.
