Doctrine (Latin: doctrina) is a code of beliefs or "a body of teachings" or "instructions", taught principles or positions, as the body of teachings in a branch of knowledge or belief system. The Greek analogy is the etymology of catechism.Often doctrine specifically connotes a corpus of religious dogma as it is promulgated by a church, but not necessarily: doctrine is also used to refer to a principle of law, in the common law traditions, established through a history of past decisions, such as the doctrine of self-defense, or the principle of fair use, or the more narrowly applicable first-sale doctrine.

Eine Doktrin (vom lateinischen doctrina -> Lehre) ist ein mehr oder weniger wissenschaftliches System von Ansichten und Aussagen; oft mit dem Anspruch, allgemeine Gültigkeit zu besitzen.Im politischen Sprachgebrauch wird die Doktrin als politische Leitlinie der Regierung aufgefasst. Sie wird einseitig von dieser erklärt und stellt kein völkerrechtliches Dokument dar.Bekannt sind vor allem die außenpolitischen Doktrinen der amerikanischen Präsidenten und in den ehemaligen realsozialistischen Staaten der Marxismus-Leninismus als Staatsdoktrin.

Doctrine (Lat. doctrina) betekent leer of verzameling leerstellingen.Met religieuze of militaire doctrines wordt een verzameling leerstellingen of dogma's bedoeld die niet ter discussie staan. Vanwege die associatie met dogmatisch en de strikte naleving ervan heeft 'doctrine' een negatieve bijklank gekregen; vergelijk bijvoorbeeld het werkwoord indoctrineren, wat vrijwel gelijk wordt gesteld met hersenspoelen. Iemand die doctrinair is, houdt zich zeer streng aan een eenmaal vastgestelde leer of aan een vaststaand stelstel.
