Doctorate
A doctorate is an
academic degree of, in many countries, the highest level, second only to the
habilitation in those (primarily
Central and
Eastern European) countries that grant the latter. The term doctorate comes from the
Latin doctor, meaning "teacher." It originated in
Medieval Europe as a license to teach at a
university. In this sense doctoral training was a form of
apprenticeship to a
guild. The traditional term of study before new teachers were admitted to the guild of "Masters of Arts", seven years, was the same as the term of apprenticeship for other occupations. Originally the terms "master" and "doctor" were synonymous, but over time the doctorate came to be regarded as a higher qualification than the
master's degree.

Doctorat
Le doctorat (du latin doctorem, de doctum, supin de docere, enseigner) est généralement le
grade universitaire le plus élevé. Le titulaire de ce grade est le docteur. Selon les pays, le doctorat peut être un grade d'État (cas en France, en Russie) ou un grade d'établissement (cas aux États-Unis, au Royaume Uni), régi de manière globale, ou par discipline.

Der Doktor (v.
lat.: docere „lehren“ oder doctus „gelehrt“;
Abk. Dr.,
Pl. Doctores, abgekürzt Dres.) ist der höchste
akademische Grad. Der akademische Doktorgrad (das Doktorat) wird durch die
Promotion an einer
Hochschule mit Promotionsrecht erlangt. Eine abgeschlossene Promotion ist Voraussetzung für die Bewilligung von öffentlichen Forschungsgeldern und für eine
Habilitation. Der Anteil der Promovierten an der deutschen Gesamtbevölkerung beträgt etwa 1,3 Prozent. Ein großer Teil davon sind
Mediziner (Dr. med., Dr. med. dent. und Dr. med. vet.), deren Anteil an den Promotionen des Jahres 2003 über ein Drittel betrug.
