Doctor is de hoogste academische graad of titel die iemand kan verwerven door een wetenschappelijke promotie aan een universiteit. Een eredoctoraat is daarop een opvallende uitzondering, welke verleend wordt aan personen die een uitzonderlijke prestatie hebben geleverd op wetenschappelijk of maatschappelijk gebied (zonder publicatie van een proefschrift). De doctorstitel is in Nederland wettelijk beschermd, en het ten onrechte voeren van deze titel is verboden.
