German counties, unusually named Districts (Kreise) are administrative units in Germany. The counties are at an intermediate level of administration between the Länder (German states) and the local / municipal levels (Gemeinden). They are not to be confused with the larger Regierungsbezirk. Their equivalent in other nations is the county or arrondissement.
