Von Mehrdeutigkeit oder Ambiguität, die (lat. ambiguitas: Zweideutigkeit, Doppelsinn) spricht man, wenn ein Zeichen mehrere Bedeutungen hat. Bei genau zwei Bedeutungen spricht man auch von Doppeldeutigkeit oder Zweideutigkeit. Ein Vexierbild zum Beispiel ist mehrdeutig, wenn es als mindestens zwei verschiedene Bilder gedeutet werden kann.

Een ambiguïteit is een dubbelzinnige taalconstructie. Ze kan zowel in natuurlijke talen als meer in het algemeen in alle formele talen voorkomen. Ambiguïteiten kunnen zowel in grammaticale zin voorkomen (een zinsconstructie is dubbelzinnig) als in semantieke zin (een woord heeft meerdere betekenissen).
