DIRECT is a proposal for a set of Shuttle Derived Launch Vehicles. Developed independently from NASA, DIRECT proposes launch vehicles different from those NASA is developing in its Project Constellation. Like Project Constellation, however, DIRECT would enable the missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond that were outlined in the U.S. government's Vision for Space Exploration. The name "DIRECT" is intended to emphasize the use of components with a more direct heritage to the existing Space Shuttle design.
