In linguistics, diglossia (; Greek: διγλωσσία < δύο+γλώσσα, two languages) refers to a situation in which two dialects or usually closely related languages are used by a single language community. In addition to the community's everyday or vernacular language variety (labeled "L" or "low" variety), a second, highly codified variety (labeled "H" or "high") is used in certain situations such as literature, formal education, or other specific settings, but not used for ordinary conversation.

Le mot diglossie a d'abord été synonyme de bilinguisme avant d'être utilisé par le linguiste William Marçais en 1930 dans sa Diglossie arabe. Il marque aujourd'hui davantage l'état dans lequel se trouvent deux systèmes linguistiques coexistant sur un territoire donné, et dont l'un occupe, le plus souvent pour des raisons historiques, un statut socio-politique inférieur. La situation diglossique est ainsi généralement une situation conflictuelle.
