The diencephalon ("interbrain") is the region of the vertebrate neural tube which gives rise to posterior forebrain structures. In development, the forebrain develops from the prosencephalon, the most anterior vesicle of the neural tube which later forms both the diencephalon and the telencephalon. In adults, the Diencephalon appears at the upper end of the brain stem, situated between the cerebrum and the brain stem. It is made up of four distinct components: the thalamus, the subthalamus, the hypothalamus and the epithalamus.

Das Zwischenhirn (Diencephalon) schließt sich scheitelwärts dem Mesencephalon (Mittelhirn) an. Es umschließt auf beiden Seiten den 3. Ventrikel.

Diencephalon (mellanhjärnan) en del av hjärnan som omfattar bland annat thalamus och hypothalamus. Den omges nästan helt av telencephalon (storhjärnan) och båda utvecklas ur den främst belägna ursprungliga hjärnblåsan, prosencephalon. En minoritet inräknar diencepahlon i hjärnstammen (truncus encephali).

Międzymózgowie (diencephalon) - część mózgowia kręgowców zawierająca trzecią komorę mózgu. Po obu stronach zlokalizowane jest wzgórze (thalamus) podzielone na wiele jąder. Do tylnej powierzchni wzgórza przywierają ciała kolankowate (corpora geniculata) zawzgórza (metathalamus). Sklepienie trzeciej komory (nadwzgórze epithalamus) różnicuje się na narządy szyszynkowe: szyszynkę, narząd przyszyszynkowy, czołowy i ciemieniowy. Dno trzeciej komory (podwzgórze hypothalamus) składa się z części wzrokowej (przysadka (hypophysis), lejek (infundibulum), pasma wzrokowe (tractus optici) i ich skrzyżowanie (chiasma opticum)) i sutkowatej. Międzymózgowie położone jest między spoidłem mózgu przednim (commissura cerebri anterior) i tylnym (c. c. posterior).
