A diatonic function, in tonal music theory, is the specific, recognized roles of notes or chords in relation to the key.Three general and inseparable essential features of harmonic function in tonal music are:Position within a gamut (the available collection) of notes determines a note's functionEach note within the gamut is a generator and collector of other notes in the gamut, in other words both the root and its chord exercise function, andExercise and identification of function depends on musical behaviour or structure. Funktionsanalys är en typ av harmonisk analys, där harmoniken beskrivs som funktioner i en tonart. Den används mestadels i europeisk musikteori, i övriga världen används ofta den snarlika steganalysen. Funktionsanalysen betecknas med så kallade funktionsbokstäver, symboler och siffror enligt en viss syntax.

הרמוניה טונאלית פונקציונאלית היא אוסף של חוקי ההרמוניה שהתיצבו בסביבות ראשית תקופת הבארוק ואותם כתב והנחיל לדורות המלחין והחוקר ז'אן פיליפ ראמו. חוקים אלו התבהרו בתקופת הברוק בייחוד ביצירותיו הקוראליות של באך. כיום נלמדים החוקים בישראל תחת השם "הרמוניה מסורתית" במגמות המוזיקה התיכוניות ושליטה בנושא הינה חובה לבחינות הכניסה לבתי הספר למוזיקה באוניברסיטאות .ההרמוניה הפונקציונאלית מתבססת על סולם מינורי או סולם מז'ורי לסוגם. הפונקציונאליות בהרמוניה בבסיסה בנויה על-פי עקרון של היררכיה ברורה בין דרגות הסולם ה"יציבות" (דרגות 1,3,5) ל"לא יציבות" כאשר כל דרגה הינה בעלת "שאיפה" אחרת ליציבות.
