In the anatomy of mammals, the thoracic diaphragm, or simply the diaphragm , is a sheet of internal skeletal muscle that extends across the bottom of the rib cage. The diaphragm separates the thoracic cavity (heart, lungs & ribs) from the abdominal cavity and performs an important function in respiration. A diaphragm in anatomy can refer to other flat structures such as the urogenital diaphragm or pelvic diaphragm, but "the diaphragm" generally refers to the thoracic diaphragm. Other vertebrates such as amphibians and reptiles have diaphragms or diaphragm-like structures, but important details of the anatomy vary, such as the position of lungs in the abdominal cavity.

Das Zwerchfell (lateinisch Diaphragma [], latinisiert von griechisch διάφραγμα, von altgriechisch διαφράσσω (diafrásso)) ist eine Muskel-Sehnen-Platte der Säugetiere, welche die Brust- und die Bauchhöhle voneinander trennt. Es hat eine kuppelförmige Gestalt und ist der wichtigste Atemmuskel. Die Muskelkontraktion des Zwerchfells führt zu einer Einatmung (Inspiration). Beim Menschen ist es 3 bis 5 mm dick und leistet in Ruhe 60 bis 80 % der zur Inspiration benötigten Muskelarbeit.

Mellangärde, diafragma, en muskel i brösthålans botten på däggdjur. Mellangärdet är den viktigaste muskeln i andningsprocessen. Oönskade reflexsammandragningar i mellangärdet leder till hicka. Diafragman innerveras av frenikusnerven från nervplexat Plexus cervicales (halsflätan). Spänd diafragma gör att luften sugs in. Avslappnad diafragma gör att luften trycks ut. Förutom vid andning används mellangärdet även vid kräkning, urinering och exkrementering.

Przepona (łac. diaphragma) - główny mięsień oddechowy występujący u ssaków, należy do mięśni poprzecznie prążkowanych płaskich. Oddziela jamę brzuszną od jamy klatki piersiowej i stanowi jej ścianę dolną. Przepona jest uwypuklona w stronę klatki piersiowej w formie dwóch kopuł - prawej i lewej, przy czym prawa jest ustawiona o jedno międzyżebrze wyżej. Ruchy przepony są niezależne od woli, jednak mogą być przez człowieka modyfikowane (na przykład podczas śpiewu czy wstrzymywania oddechu).
