Diethyl ether, also known as ether and ethoxyethane, is a clear, colorless, and highly flammable liquid with a low boiling point and a characteristic smell. It is the most common member of a class of chemical compounds known generically as ethers. It is an isomer of butanol. Diethyl ether has the formula CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3. It is used as a common solvent and has been used as a general anesthetic. Ether is sparingly soluble in water (6.9 g/100 ml).

L'éther diéthylique, également appelé éther éthylique ou éthoxyéthane ou diéthyl éther ou oxyde de diéthyle ou éther sulfurique ou tout simplement éther (à ne pas confondre avec la famille des éthers dont il fait partie), est un liquide limpide, incolore et très inflammable avec un point d'ébullition bas et une odeur typique. Le diéthyl éther a pour formule CH3-CH2-O-CH2-CH3. Il est souvent utilisé comme solvant et a été un anesthésique général. Le diéthyl éther a un indice de cétane élevé (85 - 96) . Le diéthyl éther est faiblement miscible dans l'eau.

Als men over ether spreekt, zonder kwalificatie, wordt meestal diethylether bedoeld: CH3CH2-O-CH2CH3. Dit is een zeer vluchtige en brandbare vloeistof die bij 35 °C kookt. De damp/lucht mengsels zijn ontplofbaar en de damp is zwaarder dan lucht. Bovendien kan ether langzaam met zuurstof reageren waardoor er instabiele peroxiden ontstaan die spontaan kunnen ontleden (ontploffen).
