device driver

A device driver, or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a computer hardware device.A driver typically communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware is connected. When a calling program invokes a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device. Once the device sends data back to the driver, the driver may invoke routines in the original calling program. Drivers are hardware-dependent and operating-system-specific. They usually provide the interrupt handling required for any necessary asynchronous time-dependent hardware interface.

Un pilote informatique souvent abrégé en pilote et quelquefois nommé driver (de l'anglais) est un programme informatique, destiné à permettre à un autre programme (souvent un système d'exploitation) d'interagir avec un périphérique. En général, chaque périphérique a son propre pilote. Sans pilote, l'imprimante ou la carte graphique ne pourraient pas être utilisées.

Dazu nutzt es Schnittstellen zum Kommunikationsbus oder anderen Kommunikationssystemen, an denen das Gerät angeschlossen ist, um Steuersignale und/oder Daten zum Gerät zu senden bzw. von ihm zu empfangen. Auf der anderen Seite stellt es eine Schnittstelle für eine Nutzung dieser Funktionen durch das Betriebssystem oder andere Anwendungsprogramme bereit.

Sterownik urządzenia to program lub fragment programu odpowiadający za dane urządzenie i pośredniczący pomiędzy nim, a resztą systemu komputerowego. Zwykle uabstrakcyjnia pewne cechy urządzenia, choć może jedynie zajmować się kwestiami uprawnień dostępu i udostępniać urządzenie tak jak jest. Wtedy program, który z niego korzysta też jest w pewnym sensie sterownikiem.

In informatica, è detto driver l'insieme di procedure, spesso scritte in assembly, che permette ad un sistema operativo di pilotare un dispositivo hardware. Il driver permette al sistema operativo di utilizzare l'hardware senza sapere come esso funzioni, ma dialogandoci attraverso un'interfaccia standard, i registri del controllore della periferica, che astrae dall'implementazione dell'hardware e che ne considera solo il funzionamento logico. In questo modo hardware diverso costruito da produttori diversi può essere utilizzato in modo intercambiabile.
