Developmental biology is the study of the process by which organisms grow and develop. Modern developmental biology studies the genetic control of cell growth, differentiation and "morphogenesis", which is the process that gives rise to tissues, organs and anatomy.

Developmental Biology is a peer-reviewed scientific journal. It was established in 1959 and is the official journal of the Society for Developmental Biology. It publishes research on the mechanisms of development, differentiation, and growth in animals and plants at the molecular, cellular, and genetic levels. The journal is published twice a month by Elsevier.

Utvecklingsbiologi är det fält inom biologin som studerar hur organismer växer och utvecklas. Modern utvecklingsbiologi studerar hur olika gener kontrollerar celldelning, cellers differentiering (hur de specialiserar sig) och morfogenes (den process som ger upphov till vävnader, organ och anatomi). Embryologi är den avdelning av utvecklingsbiologin som studerar organismerna från encellsstadiet, det vill säga i de flesta fall zygoten, till det embryonala stadiets slut (vilket inte alltid är synonymt med tillblivelsen av en fritt levande organism). Embryologi var fram till 1900-talet en nästan helt deskriptiv vetenskap. Dagens embryologi, liksom dagens utvecklingsbiologi, avhandlar med de stadier och skeenden som krävs för att en levande organisms kropp ska utformas korrekt och fullständigt.
