The term developed country, or advanced country, is used to categorize countries with developed economies in which the tertiary and quaternary sectors of industry dominate. This level of economic development usually translates into a high income per capita and a high Human Development Index (HDI). Countries with high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita often fit the above description of a developed economy. However, anomalies exist when determining "developed" status by the factor GDP per capita alone.

It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to determine and indicate whether a country is a developed, developing, or underdeveloped country and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life. The index was developed in 1990 by Indian Nobel prize winner Amartya Sen, Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq, with help from Gustav Ranis of Yale University and Lord Meghnad Desai of the London School of Economics and has been used since then by the United Nations Development Programme in its annual Human Development Report. Described by Sen as a "vulgar measure", because of its limitations, it nonetheless focuses attention on wider aspects of development than the per capita income measure it supplanted, and is a pathway for researchers into the wide variety of more detailed measures contained in the Human Development Reports.

Les pays développés sont des pays dont la majorité de la population accède à tous ses besoins vitaux ainsi qu'à un certain confort et à l'éducation. Les premières définitions ne faisaient appel qu'au développement économique, les pays développés étant ceux ayant un fort produit intérieur brut. On raisonne maintenant en termes de développement humain.

Wskaźnik Rozwoju Społecznego - HDI - (ang.  Human Development Index czasem tłumaczone jako Wskaźnik Rozwoju Ludzkiego) – to syntetyczny miernik opisujący efekty w zakresie społeczno-ekonomicznego rozwoju poszczególnych krajów. Stąd też czasem określa się go jako Wskaźnik Rozwoju społeczno-ekonomicznego. System ten wprowadzony został przez ONZ dla celów porównań międzynarodowych. Wskaźnik został opracowany w roku 1990 przez pakistańskiego ekonomistę Mahbuba ul Haqa. Od 1993 wykorzystuje go w swoich corocznych raportach oenzetowska agenda ds. rozwoju (UNDP). Pomimo popularności uważa się go za mniej miarodajny aniżeli Wskaźnik Ubóstwa Ludzkiego.

Ontwikkelde landen zijn landen die een hoge graad van industrialisatie hebben bereikt, en die van de hogere levensstandaarden die volgen uit rijkdom en technologie gebruik kunnen maken. De meeste ontwikkelde landen zijn meestal ook democratieën.Landen die niet in deze categorie kunnen worden thuisgebracht worden vaak ontwikkelingslanden genoemd, of in extreme gevallen onderontwikkelde landen. Andere termen die soms gebruikt worden zijn de eerste wereld, voor de ontwikkelde landen, en de derde wereld, voor de onontwikkelde landen. De tweede wereld was vroeger een term die voorbehouden was voor de Communistische landen. Ook wordt vaak de term Westerse landen gebruikt, hoewel deze term niet volledig accuraat is.
