A developed country or "more developed country" (MDC), is a country with an economy with high growth and security. Most commonly the criteria for evaluating the degree of development is to look at gross domestic product (GDP), the per capita income, level of industrialization, amount of widespread infrastructure and general standard of living. Which criteria, and which countries are classified as being developed, is a contentious issue. According to the International Monetary Fund, advanced economies comprise 65.8% of global nominal GDP and 52.1% of global GDP (PPP) in 2010. In 2011, the ten largest advanced economies by either nominal GDP or GDP (PPP) were: the United States, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Spain, South Korea and Australia.

Als Industriestaaten oder auch Industrieländer oder Staaten der Ersten Welt, seltener auch Industrienationen, bezeichnet man allgemein technisch hoch entwickelte Staaten mit einer bedeutenden eigenen industriellen Produktion von Gütern.

Les pays développés sont des pays dont la majorité de la population accède à tous ses besoins vitaux ainsi qu'à un certain confort et à l'éducation. Les premières définitions ne faisaient appel qu'au développement économique, les pays développés étant ceux ayant un fort produit intérieur brut. On raisonne maintenant en termes de développement humain.

Industriland, i-land, industrialiserat land, rikt land, är ett begrepp som har använts för att beskriva de länder som genomgått industrialisering, till skillnad från utvecklingsländer där jordbruk och landsbygd fortfarande dominerar. Industriländer är oftast rika och har en balanserad inkomst. De flesta industriländer ligger på Norra halvklotet, men undantag finns. Australien och Nya Zeeland är exempel på två industriländer som ligger på Södra halvklotet. De flesta arbetar med industri- och servicearbeten. Väldigt få arbetar inom jordbruket, som industrialiserats med maskiner.

Ontwikkelde landen zijn landen die een hoge graad van industrialisatie hebben bereikt, en die van de hogere levensstandaarden die volgen uit rijkdom en technologie gebruik kunnen maken. De meeste ontwikkelde landen zijn meestal ook democratieën.
