Desktop refers to the surface of a desk.

A file shortcut in Microsoft Windows is a small file containing a target URI or GUID to an object, or the name of a target program file that the shortcut represents. The shortcut might additionally specify parameters to be passed to the target program when it is run. Each shortcut can have its own icon. Shortcuts are very commonly placed on a desktop, in an application launcher panel such as the Windows Start menu, or in the main menu of a desktop environment.

Der Begriff Desktop bezeichnet:

En informatique, le bureau désigne l'espace de travail visible lorsqu'aucune fenêtre n'a été ouverte ou qu'elles ont toutes été réduites, ceci dans le cas d'un environnement graphique. Ce terme a été choisi en comparaison avec la surface de travail disponible sur le meuble portant le même nom. En anglais, on utilise le terme desktop.

In informatica, l'espressione inglese desktop (lett. scrivania) può indicare:

• a livello di hardware, un computer desktop, cioè un computer che può stare sulla scrivania (in inglese desktop)
• a livello software, il desktop environment, cioè un ambiente grafico caratterizzato dalla metafora della scrivania
