The dermis is a layer of skin between the epidermis (with which it makes up the cutis) and subcutaneous tissues, that consists of connective tissue and cushions the body from stress and strain. It is divided into two layers, the superficial area adjacent to the epidermis called the papillary region and a deep thicker area known as the reticular dermis. The dermis is tightly connected to the epidermis through a basement membrane. Structural components of the dermis are collagen, elastic fibers, and extrafibrillar matrix (previously called ground substance). It also contains Mechanoreceptors that provide the sense of touch and heat, hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, apocrine glands, lymphatic vessels and blood vessels. Those blood vessels provide nourishment and waste removal for both dermal and epidermal cells.

Die Dermis oder auch Corium (Lederhaut) ist eine Schicht der eigentlichen Haut (Cutis) der Wirbeltiere. Die Lederhaut dient der Verankerung und der Ernährung der gefäßfreien Epidermis. Der deutsche Name „Lederhaut“ deutet bereits an, dass aus dieser Hautschicht durch Gerben Leder hergestellt werden kann.

Le derme est un tissu de type conjonctif formant la peau avec l'épiderme et l'hypoderme. Son épaisseur est variable selon les régions corporelles mais elle peut atteindre un millimètre.

De lederhuid of dermis is een laag bindweefsel die onder het epitheel van de huid ligt. De onderste lagen van de dermis zijn rijk aan vooral collagene vezels. Deze vezels lopen grotendeels parallel aan het huid-oppervlak en leveren zo een belangrijke bijdrage aan de mechanische sterkte van de huid.
Aan het collageen dankt de lederhuid ook zijn naam. Bij looiing van een huid verdwijnt het epitheel en verdicht het collageen zich tot datgene dat wij "leer" of "leder" noemen.
Direct onder de epidermis is de dermis minder rijk aan vezels. Hier vinden we een groot aantal verschillende typen bindweefselcellen, zoals bijvoorbeeld fibroblasten en mestcellen. Ook lymfocyten en andere witte bloedcellen kunnen in de buitenste lagen van de dermis doordringen. In dit meer celrijke bindweefsel spelen zich allerlei afweerprocessen van de huid af.
