A derecho is a widespread and long-lived, violent convectively induced windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms usually taking the form of a bow echo. Derechos are usually not associated with a cold front, but a stationary front within a highly buoyant, warm airmass. A warm weather phenomenon, derechos occur mostly in summer, especially July (in the northern hemisphere), but can occur at any time of the year and occur as frequently at night as in the daylight hours.

On appelle derecho tout système météorologique convectif extratropical qui se déplace rapidement et qui produit de très fortes rafales descendantes causant d'importants dommages généralisés (Fujita, Wakimoto, 1981). Il se classe dans la catégorie des systèmes convectifs de méso-échelle. Le derecho dure plusieurs heures, même au-delà de 10 heures, et parcourt donc une très grande distance pouvant dépasser les 1000 km (Hirt, Johns, 1987). La trajectoire d'un tel système est en ligne droite, d'où son appellation empruntée à l'espagnol signifiant « tout droit ».

Ein Gewitter ist eine mit luftelektrischen Entladungen (Blitz) und Donner verbundene komplexe meteorologische Erscheinung. Auf der Erde finden ständig etwa 2000 Gewitter statt.Gewitter werden in der Regel von kräftigen wolkenbruchartigen Regen- oder Hagelschauern begleitet. Vor einer Gewitterfront wehen böige Winde mit bis zu Sturmstärke. Starke Gewitter können sich auch zu Unwettern entwickeln. Auch Tornados können in Zusammenhang mit einem Gewitter auftreten. Sommergewitter sind häufiger als Wintergewitter, bei denen auch kräftige Schneeschauer auftreten können.
