The controversial striker returned to the national team after a nine-month self-imposed exile. However, despite his roller-coaster career, there is no denying De Bilde’s quality in front of goal. He burst onto the Belgian league scene in 1994, when he won the Belgian Player of the Year award. He subsequently shone for PSV Eindhoven, whom he helped to win the Dutch league title in 1997, and showed his class with 67 goals in his first 100 games for three clubs.
