Birthday
It is customary in many cultures to celebrate the anniversary of one's birthday, for example by having a birthday party with family and/or friends. Gifts are often given to the person celebrating the birthday. It is also customary to treat people specially on their birthday, either generally acceding to their wishes, or subjecting them to a rite of transition.

Mit Geburtstag einer Person bezeichnet manden Tag, an dem die Person geboren wurde undden Jahrestag der Geburt.Geht dem Wort „Geburtstag“ eine Ordinalzahl voraus, so kann es sich in diesem Fall lediglich um die zweite Bedeutung handeln (Jedes Lebewesen hat schließlich nur einen Tag, an dem es geboren wurde).Mit dem „ersten Geburtstag“ ist der erste Jahrestag der Geburt gemeint.

Urodziny
Urodziny to zwyczaj świątecznego obchodzenia (czasami hucznego) rocznicy dnia, w którym ktoś się urodził. Zwykle wiąże się ze składaniem życzeń i wręczaniem prezentów jubilatowi. Obchodzenie urodzin wywodzi się z religii starożytnego Rzymu, jest to święto ku czci Geniusza. Z tego powodu było pierwotnie tępione przez chrześcijan, którzy zamiast tego woleli obchodzić imieniny i rocznicę śmierci.Przyjęcia urodzinowe zaczęły się przed laty w Europie. Ludzie wierzyli w istnienie dobrych i złych duchów, nazywanych niekiedy dobrymi oraz złymi wróżkami. Każdy się obawiał, że duchy te mogą wyrządzić krzywdę solenizantowi, toteż otaczał się on przyjaciółmi oraz krewnymi, których życzenia, podobnie zresztą jak sama obecność, miały go chronić przed nieznanymi niebezpieczeństwami czyhającymi podczas urodzin. Jeszcze skuteczniejszą opiekę zapewniało dawanie prezentów. Dodatkową ochronę gwarantowało wspólne spożycie posiłku, co pomagało też zjednać błogosławieństwa dobrych duchów. A zatem przyjęcie urodzinowe miało pierwotnie zabezpieczyć przed złem i zapewnić pomyślność na nadchodzący rok. (Birthday Parties Around the World, 1967)
