It is not wise to trust someone to support you, if he cannot keep himself safe. Alternative form: 泥菩萨过江…自身难保 (ni2 pu2 sa4 guo4 jiang1... zi4 shen1 nan2 bao3).

 
狡兔三窟
jiao3 tu4 san1 ku1
A cunning rabbit has three holes.
Meaning that it's wise to have more than one place to hide in time of danger. The mouse that has but one hole is quickly taken. Compare with 有备无患 (you3 bei4 wu2 huan4) and 曲突徙薪 (qu1 tu1 xi3 xin1).

 
螳螂捕蝉(…黄雀在后)
tang2 lang2 bu3 chan2 (...huang2 que2 zai4 hou4).
The mantis stalks the cicada (...unaware of the oriole behind).
Said of someone just pay attention to the profit of doing something, and do not consider the potential danger involved. Blinded by greed.

 
骑虎难下
qi2 hu3 nan2 xia4
Difficult to get off the tiger that you are riding.
This is a metaphor for describing someone who is in a difficult situation.
