Departments ( IPA: ) are administrative units of France and many former French colonies, roughly analogous to English counties. The 100 French departments are now grouped into 22 metropolitan and four overseasregions. All regions have identical legal status as integral parts of France. They are subdivided into 342 arrondissements.
