Cytokines are a group of proteins and peptides that are used in organisms as signaling compounds. These chemical signals are similar to hormones and neurotransmitters and are used to allow one cell to communicate with another. The cytokine family consists mainly of smaller water-soluble proteins and glycoproteins (proteins with an added sugar chain) with a mass of between 8 and 30 kDa. While hormones are released from specific organs into the blood and neurotransmitters are released by nerves, cytokines are released by many types of cells. They are particularly important in both innate and adaptive immune responses. Due to their central role in the immune system, cytokines are involved in a variety of immunological, inflammatory and infectious diseases. However, not all their functions are limited to the immune system, as they are also involved in several developmental processes during embryogenesis.

Les cytokines sont des substances solubles de communication synthétisées par les cellules du système immunitaire ou par d'autres cellules et/ou tissus, agissant à distance sur d'autres cellules pour en réguler l'activité et la fonction. Le terme cytokine est peu connu du grand public alors qu'avec les hormones et les neuromédiateurs, ces molécules sont essentielles à la communication de nos cellules.

Ein Zytokin oder Cytokin ist ein zuckerhaltiges Protein, das regulierende Funktionen für das Wachstum und die Differenzierung von Körperzellen hat. Es handelt sich um eine Gruppe von Peptiden, die vor allem die Proliferation und Differenzierung von Zielzellen einleiten bzw. regulieren. Eine Untergruppe der Cytokine wird dementsprechend als Wachstumsfaktoren bezeichnet. Viele Zytokine spielen außerdem eine wichtige Rolle für immunologische Reaktionen, die dann allgemein als Mediatoren bezeichnet werden. In der Zellbiologie nimmt die Bedeutung der Zytokine ständig zu. Mehrere Zytokine werden heute kommerziell als rekombinante Proteine produziert.

Cytokiny, są cząsteczkami białkowymi wpływającymi na wzrost, proliferację i pobudzenie komórek biorących udział w odpowiedzi odpornościowej oraz komórek hemopoetycznych. Cytokiny mogą wybiórczo pobudzać odpowiedź komórkową lub humoralną, co w połączeniu z ich ilością (ponad 100 opisanych cytokin i wciąż odkrywane nowe) powoduje, że powstaje niezwykle skuteczny, ale także bardzo skomplikowany i czuły system powiązań pomiędzy komórkami układu odpornościowego, tzw. sieć cytokin. Sytuację dodatkowo komplikuje fakt, że cytokiny wpływają nie tylko na leukocyty, ale także na inne komórki organizmu, stymulując powstawanie gorączki, regulując morfogenezę komórek i tkanek, czy też biorąc udział w procesach patologicznych działając cytotoksycznie. Dodatkowo należy wziąć pod uwagę oddziaływania pomiędzy cytokinami. Te i inne fakty nakazują spojrzeć na cytokiny nie tylko jako na białka działające lokalnie, ale także jako na grupę cząsteczek o kluczowym znaczeniu dla funkcjonowania organizmu.

Een cytokine is een proteïne die een rol speelt in de immuunafweer. Er bestaan verschillende soorten, die uitgescheiden wordt door verschillende soorten lichaamscellen.Naast de rol in ontstekingsreacties en aangeboren of aangepaste immuunafweer, spelen sommige cytokinen ook een rol bij de embryogenese.
