The CYCLONE, was an early computer built in 1959 by Iowa State University, was based on the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) architecture developed by John von Neumann. As with all computers of its era, it was a one of a kind machine that could not exchange programs with other computers (even other IAS machines).

In meteorology, a cyclone is an area of low atmospheric pressure characterized by inward spiraling winds that rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere of the Earth. Since the generic term covers a wide variety of meteorological phenomena, such as tropical cyclones, extratropical cyclones, and tornadoes, meteorologists rarely use it without additional qualification.

Un cyclone (du grec kuklos, cercle) est un terme météorologique qui désigne un système dépressionnaire en rotation. Même si toute dépression peut être appelée un cyclone, ce terme est le plus souvent réservé à certains types particuliers de systèmes qui se forment au-dessus des eaux chaudes des mers tropicales, les cyclones tropicaux. Par extension, la circulation cyclonique est la direction que prendra le flux d'air autour d'une dépression ou d'un creux barométrique, soit anti-horaire dans l'hémisphère nord et horaire dans celui du sud. On applique également le suffixe cyclone à certains phénomènes de très petites échelles où une rotation se produit.

Als Zyklon (Plural Zyklone) wird ein tropischer Wirbelsturm vor allem im Indischen Ozean bezeichnet. In anderen Gegenden der Erde nennt man diesen Hurrikan (Amerika) oder Taifun (Ost- und Südostasien). Er tritt als heftiger Wirbelsturm vor allem im Golf von Bengalen auf. Auch die im Indischen Ozean südlich des Äquators vorkommenden heftigen Wirbelstürme im Bereich von Mauritius, La Réunion, Madagaskar und der afrikanischen Ostküste nennt man Zyklone.

Cyklon - rodzaj cyrkulacji atmosferycznej typowej dla niżów barycznych; wirowy układ wiatrów w obrębie niżu (przemieszczają się po liniach spiralnych od zewnątrz do środka), na półkuli północnej kierunek przeciwny do kierunku ruchu wskazówek zegara, zaś na południowej zgodny z kierunkiem wskazówek zegara. Cyklony występują zazwyczaj w umiarkowanych i wysokich szerokościach geograficznych, ich przechodzeniu towarzyszą zmiany pogody (zmiany temperatury powietrza, ciśnienia, prędkości wiatru, pojawienie się silnych opadów itp.). Cyklony o katastrofalnych nieraz skutkach, występujące w niskich szerokościach geograficznych określa się jako cyklony tropikalne.

サイクロン (Cyclone)とは、熱帯低気圧のうちインド洋北部・インド洋南部・太平洋南部で発生するものである。英語のCycloneは、低気圧、暴風全般を指す語でもある。蛇のとぐろと言う意味から名付けられた気象用語であって、粉体分離器のサイクロン (Cyclone)とは語の由来は同じである。粉体分離器のサイクロン は粉体分離器を参照のこと。自動車のサイクロンはGMCサイクロンを参照。
