Cuttlefish are marine animals of the order Sepiida belonging to the Cephalopoda class (which also includes squid, octopuses, and nautiluses). Despite their common name, cuttlefish are not fish but molluscs. Recent studies indicate that cuttlefish may be the most intelligent invertebrate species. Cuttlefish have an internal shell (cuttlebone), large W shaped eyes, and eight arms and two tentacles furnished with denticulated suckers, with which they secure their prey.Cuttlefish eat small molluscs, crabs, shrimp, fish and other cuttlefish. Their predators include dolphins, sharks, fish, seals and other cuttlefish. They live about 1 to 2 years.

Les seiches constituent l' des Sepiida. Ce sont des mollusques marins (céphalopodes) voisins du calamar, et longs d'une trentaine de centimètres. Ils possèdent un flotteur interne (l'os de seiche), une tête qui porte des bras courts munis de ventouses, ainsi que deux grands tentacules, cet animal projette un liquide noir, appelé sépia par un organe spécifique: l'entonnoir (débouchant dans la cavité palléale). Ce liquide, aussi appelé l'encre ou le 'noir' lui permet de se dissimuler pour prendre la fuite. En restauration elles portent souvent le nom de chipirons ou de supions, voire d'encornets. Die Ordnung der Sepien (Sepiida) oder Echten Tintenfische ist eine Teilgruppe der Überordnung der Zehnarmigen Tintenfische (Decabrachia) innerhalb der Tintenfische (Coleoidea). Sie haben das ursprüngliche kalkige gasgefüllte Gehäuse in stark abgewandelter Form als Sepia-Schale beibehalten.

Mątwy, sepie (Sepioidea) - drapieżne głowonogi dziesięcioramienne, mają owalne ciało o długości do 30 cm. Charakteryzują się workiem trzewiowym z dwoma płetwami oraz znajdującymi się w części głowowej ramionami chwytnymi. W sytuacji zagrożenia mątwa wystrzeliwuje ciemnobrązową substancję (sepię) z worka czernidłowego. Tworzy się wówczas wokół niej ciemna osłona, która dezorientuje i zniechęca napastnika. Potrafią zmieniać barwę, dzięki czemu łatwo dostosowują się do koloru otoczenia.

De zeekatten of sepia's (Sepiida) is een orde van weekdieren die behoort tot de inktvissen, net als o.a. de octopus. De bekendste soort is de gewone zeekat (Sepia officinalis). Dit is een veel voorkomend dier aan de Nederlandse en Belgische kust, vooral in de open wateren als Noordzee en Oosterschelde. Een sepia kan ongeveer 50 cm groot worden. De mannetjes worden niet ouder dan 2 tot 3 jaar, het vrouwtje leeft zelfs maar één jaar.
