The term custodian may refer to:

• Janitor, a person who cleans, maintains, provides security and initiates repairs or makes minor repairs to buildings.
• Custodian bank, an organization responsible for safeguarding a firm's or individual's financial assets
• Custodian helmet, the helmet worn by many members of the British Police Force
• A legal guardian or conservator (law) may be called a custodian in some jurisdictions

Als Depotbank (engl. Custodian) bezeichnet man in Deutschland gemäß dem Investmentgesetz (InvG) Kreditinstitute, bei denen die Sondervermögen (z. B. Wertpapiere) von Investmentfonds in Wertpapierdepots hinterlegt werden. Zuweilen werden auch allgemein Kreditinstitute in ihrer Funktion als depotführende Stelle als Depotbank (engl. Custodian) bezeichnet.

De custodian is de financiële partij die de effecten bewaart.
Waar vroeger aandelen die verkocht werden werkelijk van hand tot hand gingen, is dat tegenwoordig niet meer het geval. De bank houdt giraal de effecten bij, legt alleen het aantal en de soort vast. De fysieke stukken zelf worden bij een aangewezen partij, de custodian, in bewaring gegeven.
